Club History

Founded in 1837 Athlone Boat Club is one of the oldest rowing clubs in Ireland. The club is steeped in tradition and has played a leading role in the sporting history of the town. We are located on the banks of the River Shannon beside Custume Barracks.

Our club caters for oarsmen and oarswomen of all ages from Junior to master’s and has a proud history at National and International level.

With the recent delivery of two new recreational boats, we have introduced leisure rowing in the club and hope to develop same in tandem with competitive rowing.

To date, the club has been fortunate in being awarded funding from LEADER and from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport’s Sports Capital Fund, the remainder of monies needed to complete the boathouse has to be raised by the club. With a shortfall of €119,000 and the impact of COVID 19 on our yearly fundraising events, there are limited ways and means of the club raising money. Our three-year Development Draw is one way the club can raise money, it has been running since 2018. We will have a number of new draws and you can stay up to date by exploring our new exciting website for our Rio 2016 Draw to be held this coming summer. Click Here To Buy
