From the Shannon to the World Stage: Athlone’s Martin O’Grady and Donagh Claffey Power into U23 “A” Final at the World Rowing Championships

What began as a shared love of rowing on the River Shannon has transformed into one of Athlone Boat Club’s most inspiring journeys. Martin O’Grady and Donagh Claffey, who first sat into a boat together as juniors in Athlone Boat Club, have earned their place in the A Final of the U23 World Rowing Championships this time in the highly competitive men’s double scull.

As teenagers, the duo were a dominant force on the domestic circuit, capturing multiple Irish Championship titles and leading Athlone BC to national glory. Their absolute talent and relentless commitment and drive saw both athletes selected to represent Ireland at the U19 World Rowing Championships in 2021, a major achievement and a milestone that hinted of their future potential.

The story didn’t stop there. After school, the pair continued their journey in Galway, where they balanced academics with elite training with University of Galway Boat Club. There, they continued to add national titles to their names and wore the green vest of Ireland at international events, all while developing as athletes and teammates.

Now, selected together in the double scull, Martin and Donagh have pushed through the heats and semifinals of the U23 World Championships to secure a coveted spot in the A Final. It’s a remarkable achievement, but for those who have watched their progression from juniors in Athlone to now, it’s no surprise.

Their story is one of absolute commitment, dedication, and shared ambition, from Junior National Champions to high performance college rowing and now into the top tier of Under 23 World Rowing they are showing what long-term development and ambition can achieve.

All eyes now turn to their performance in the final on Saturday 26th July but whatever the result, Martin O’Grady and Donagh Claffey have made Athlone Boat Club beyond proud, their achievements have inspired so many of the juniors coming up behind them and will continue to inspire generations of future Athlone rowers.

We wish Martin and Donagh every success tomorrow and into their future and congratulate them and their families and friends on such fantastic achievements so far!
